BRITAIN IN PICTURES - BOOK SERIES

Listening to : The Whitest Boy Alive – 1517

While at the aforementioned antiques market i discovered a series of books from the 1940's called 'Britain in pictures'. I was imediatly drawn in by the cover illustrations...

From Shelf appeal:

'The Britain in Pictures series of books was published in the late 1930s and 1940s by Collins. It was edited by the then literary editor of the Spectator,Walter James Turner.

The overall aim of the series was to tell a social history of Britain, perhaps spurred on by the war and a subsequent re-appropriation of nationalism in all its forms. Although the series ran with the subtitle ‘The British People in Pictures’, the books were as much about writing as pictures. The roll call of authors reads like a veritable who’s-who of the literary, political and arts worlds of the period. From John Piper on British Romantic Artists, Cecil Beaton onEnglish Photographers and Edith Sitwell on English Women to Graham Greene on British Dramatists and John Betjeman on English Cities and Small Towns.

A uniformly designed set of over 100 books, they look great as a collection.'

After a little research i found that there are 132 in the series - listed HERE. I cant find many images online unfortunately, hense the rather awful ones here, but each has a wonderfully simple but delicate illustration on the cover. The type varies from title to title, but they all feel like a solid collection. I need to start this collection!!

There is nothing wrong with judging a book by its cover if the covers look like this.

Antique times

listening to: Future Islands – Balance

This Morning i was up at 5 to head down to Sunbury for the antiques market. I found some lovely bits of type but could only sneak a few pretty poor quality shots when the stall owners weren't looking.

listening to: wise words

This pretty much sums up my thoughts about work right now.
We all know the work of saul bass but i I have to admit that past the super famous work that Saul bass created in his prestigious career (His work with Hitchcock in the 60's etc) i was pretty ignorant to his perhaps lesser known film experimentations, his philosophies and i knew little about the man himself.
So when an old friend mentioned NETWORK AWESOME were showing a feature on Saulbass. i jumped to it.

Featuring a selection of interviews, short films and his famous titles sequences NA also has a wonderful article about the man written by Pat Kirkham, a design lecturer and historian. It works well to give you a taste of a wider feild of work and a glimps in to his apparently wonderfully passionate attitude towards making and teaching. Awsome indeed.

for those who donet know anything about Newtwork awesome, their about page does a pretty good job of explaining:
Network Awesome is a platform for entertaining and interesting TV. We spotlight the best from the past to create something new for the future. In a sense it’s TV about TV but our wider intent is to show something about culture as a whole. This can manifest itself in a kids cartoon from 1973, an interview from 1948 or a movie from 1993 – We’re pretty open minded about what Network Awesome is and what it can be. It’s our commitment to provide you what we think is interesting and clever TV - hopefully you agree.

Because Network Awesome is an online platform, we collect all our programming from fully public sources. We claim no proprietary rights over any programming. We just collect, organize and present it to you in a nice and tidy package. Quality is our goal and only guiding light.

Im really into thier style of curation, the videos are collected and presented to you in a succinct solid form with further reading and investigation if you want it but no confusing 'you might like' / 'related video' endless path distractions. a sort of reliable semi-on-demand-channel.

plus they show loads of the old 60's spiderman and batman cartoons. YUSS.

RYAN TODD is ACE!

Listening to: At The Drive-In – One Armed Scissor

As part of London Design Week our studio mate, illustrator, designer, publisher, all round awesome man, Ryan Todd, was asked to represent England, in a illustration battle against Italy’s, Jacopo Zibar.

Natuzzi asked them both to interpret graphically their vision of London. The resulting work is on display in the windows of Natuzzi’s flagship store and the public are being asked to vote for their favourite interpretation.
This visually impactful display will explore the contrasts between a Londoner’s perspective of the capital versus, a Milanese’s view of London.

The show is on for at leaste the rest of design week and looks great. find more details here.

Last night was the private view, there was vast quantities of good food, better wine and lots of very expensive leather furniture on show at the private view and ryans work really stood out like a refreshing slap to the chops. the wall of giant building block was pretty spellbounding. BON BON RYAN!
