FABRICATORS

Listening to : Pulled Apart By Horses – Tough Love

I was approached by artists James Capper and Alex Chinneck to produce a poster for their forthcoming group show, FABRICATORS.

This is shaping up to be a really exciting show of Young british sculpture.

James Capper (b.1987), Alex Chinneck (b.1984), Luke Hart (b.1985) and Sam Zealey (b.1986) are interested in how things are made, how they function and the properties of materials. James Capper sheds light on industrial processes, Sam Zealey on engineering, Alex Chinneck on architecture and Luke Hart on advanced materials.

These artists are problem-solvers, creating sculpture that can suggest answers to spatial concerns, and, in doing so, pose new questions. They investigate the relationships between humans and the physical structures and tools that we interact with. One aspect of this investigation is the exploration into the different possibilities of materials, including their molecular make-up, physical properties and applications.

The works are part of an evolving experimentation into the form and function of sculpture. Influenced by a variety of disciplines, these sculptures partake of processes and methodologies that one would not associate with conventional art practice. Drawing upon the history of industrial processes as much as the art canon, the work of these artists does not revolve solely around a physical studio but is topically and intellectually integrated into the world.

It was great to work on an exihibition poster. It feels like a neglected craft and and element of an exhibition often overlooked by curators and artists putting on shows. I worked on this poster in a simular method as i do when designing gig posters - not actually being part of the show meant i could approach the design from an outside perspective. And much like the gig posters it was intended to be a mark and celebration of the show both now and for the future rather than just an advertising tool.

These posters will be printed up and available, from the Gallery, signed by the exhibiting artists in very limited numbers.

POSTER PEEPS

Interview with Telegramme for Wooden Toy Quarterly "The Music Edition" number 7

By Timba Smits

Name: Telegramme Studio

Location: Dalston - London - UK

website: www.telegramme.co.uk

BIO:

Telegramme is a small bespoke studio built on a love of craft and communication. We are inspired by music, people, unique ideas and beautiful things. We direct our energy in to Graphic design, illustration, art direction and web design.

Telegramme is a collaboration that snowballed in to a fully functional studio. Working via the postal service with Christopher in Bristol and Robert based in Cornwall, they developed a creative partnership thanks to a mutual love of music, art and the receiving of post. After firmly settling in to their London Studio, Telegramme picked up a third pair of hands attached to the talented mind of James and continue to use the passion that started them print-making, illustrating and designing, to run a full service design and illustration studio with the capabilities, and experience to handle any scale of job from a full brand campaign to screen printed gig posters with the same care and attention we have always given to our work.

Telegramme have since had the pleasure to make the following clients happy - Habitat, Nokia, MTV, Dare Digital, The Financial Times, Arctic Monkeys, Domino Records, DDB, condenast, Random house. Observer, Granta books - and whole bunch of their favourite bands - Telegramme are lucky chaps.

WTQ. Tell us Telegramme, How long have you been designing posters for?

answer:  Chris and i Started working working together in college on gig posters back in 2005 i think - teaching ourselves how to print them up and working out how to get bands to take a chance on posters. The UK scene was a little disparate at the time, its only now labels, bands and promotors are seeing the use in having posters made up for shows thats arnt just text slapped over the album artwork. Finally people are seeing the value in our work and the scene is growing - and it gives us a lovely warm feeling!

WTQ. Tell us about your poster for Lightspeed Champion and how the project come together?

answer: We had been doing a whole bunch of posters for the barfly at the time, Adam their head promotor has been backing the Uk poster scene for years and has been awesome in helping us get in contact with bands about doing posters. We had also, separately, been chatting with Dev (lightspeed champion) about him letting us do a poster for him at some point. So it was a great coincidence he was playing this show! A nice simple arrangement!

WTQ. How did you create the artwork for this particular poster?

answer: I had the idea for the house for sometime, it had been sitting in one of my note books as a mess of pen lines vaguely resembling an visual concept. - somehow it just seemed right for the show - sometimes our posters are based on the band, an album, name, a lyric, a song title or in this case 'hell that would be rad for that band!' Then it was a case of drawing, scanning, more drawing, colouring, splitting, setting up screens, ink, squeegees, paper, POSTERS!

WTQ. What is it about Music Posters that appeals to you the most?

answer: from a designers point of view - The freedom to try and experiment at things, creating a personal response to a band, Challenging what can and cant work as a poster - this is something that can be forgotton when getting absorbed in illustration - the gig poster is supposed to advertise a show. Trying to create what you have in mind as a concept for artwork, producing an emotional responce to the band AND making it a successful piece of deisgn that fulfils the duties of a poster is a challenge.

From a collectors point of view - whats not to love, the format, the personal response from the artist, the care and time poured in to the designing and printing, the variety - there is a designer out there for everyone, we just happen to like more than our fair share.

WTQ. Who would you like to design a poster for the most and why?

answer1:  Bruce Springsteen.Bruce Springsteen.

answer2:  Having the opportunity to work with any band we listen to and like is an honour - A poster job is really pleasurable when what we are doing just fits what the band is doing - its all about mutual love of our crafts.

answer3:  Bruce Springsteen.Bruce Springsteen.

WTQ. Any advice to anyone wanting to forge a career in the poster art game?

answer: go to shows... LOTS OF SHOWS... shows you want to go to ... its super important you want to be there! go say hi to the bands, the promoters, be prepared to work late! Posters aint a money making game its about getting to do work you love for bands you love!

UP THERE

Listening to: NEW HOT CLUB EP

Thanks to loligo for sending me a link to this Beautiful Film by Stella and Malcolm Murray.

' Shot high above the streets of New York City, UP THERE reveals the dying craft of large-scale hand painted advertising and the untold story of the painters struggling to keep it alive.

Capturing a trade that is equal part artistic precision and grueling labor, the film presents a painting tradition pre-dating modern advertising. A craft that today finds itself dangling precariously on the brink of extinction. '

Well there you go. pretty much sums it up.

This is infact an elaborate 'making of' for the Stop frame animation at the end of the film.

The campaign was again driven by MOTHER, they have been consistantly knocking out beautiful, effective campaigns for Stella for some time.  From the  Aesthetic apperatus screenprinted posters to the smooth origionals campaign

with incredable posters by Robert Mcginnis.

I still cant get over how wonderful these posters are..

This new sign painting campaign has wonderful genuine  feel lost from many recent campaigns that are tapping in to craftsmen and creatives both traditional or modern to create a 'heritage' or force the brand to support 'creativity'.

As we see agencies looking for something tangible and physical to let the public relate to the brand, we see them use names (bands/creatives/other products) without actually focusing on the skills or art created by these individuals and often ignoring the brands' context or relation to these people/crafts. SO its great to see Stella and mother have supported something geniuinly interesting and retained their own context within the campaign.. 10 points all round. especially to sky high murals.

Serious point over. Just enjoy the wonderful videos.

POSTER ROAST 2010

Listening to: Beach House – Teen Dream

So i survived the first Camden Crawl based POSTER ROAST of hopefully many more to come! Live printing, 4 killer bands, 15 + artists, 50+ beautiful posters,  strong rum,  many beers, 2 days taking over the black heart pub in camden and much carnage. This years event felt like the start of the uk poster scene really emerging and showing their huge collective talent for creating incredable artwork for incredible bands and having fun doing it with passion!
Set up in 2007 by Chris White (3d Glasses), and now assisted by his future wife Alex Curtis (Thr33 Designs) Its intention is to help develop and promote Poster Artists within the UK.

During each Poster Roast there is a curated exhibition of some of the most influential poster artists in the UK, there is also live screen printing throughout showing the process, and the option of leaving with your own freshly printed poster!

As the poster wouldn’t exist without the music, at each exhibition some of the finest bands play live sets for your ears to enjoy.

Posters are on sale throughout, and the majority of the artists are normally present, available to chat if you have any questions!

Creating affordable art for people is a large part of what these artists advocate and Poster Roast hopes that members of the public will enjoy being able to leave with something precious and unique.

I managed to meet loads of guys id yet to see outside of their online portfolios and caught up with guys i met over in flat stock Europe last year. Was great to see all of our efforts come together for the event and especially this super limited edition poster that was printed live at the venue while the bands destroyed!

This poster was a mass collaboration between 3d glasses,
Drew Millward, Luke Drozd, Army Of Cats, Thr33designs, Tape Ears,
Telegramme, Two Ducks Disco, Adam Pobiak and Dan Mumford.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase some work by all of these artists together so grab one of these commemorative posters while you can.

These were screenprinted live at Poster Roast and are limited to only 60. 2 colour on natural heavy stock. A2 size

GO BUY ONE HERE.

We have been working closely with the founders Chris and Alex on the identity and website for poster roast. Here is the first promotional flyer:

This week should see a full website, shop and forum go live for everyone to check out and buy some of these incredible artists works and find out a bit more about the emerging poster scene in the uk. keep your eyes peeled.
